Week Five Report: Feelin' Mighty Low

It was with great trepidation that The League Office announced a 6PM shotgun start to Week Five less than 24 hours before tee time. But much to the League Office's surprise, the shotgun was a giant hit with league members. Afterward, The League Office was inundated with calls for more shotgun starts. It just goes to show you. It's hard to predict which way the Crony wind will blow on a given Monday. (Please Note: We will be doing another shotgun start at 6PM on June 4th.)

After four weeks of blustery conditions and vomit, the league was greeted with a downright pleasant evening. And the league responded in a very Crony-like fashion, with 9 out of 20 players posting a net score of 36 or lower. Finally, some good golf to talk about.

Super Sub Dan Freiburger made his first appearance of 2007 and picked up right where he left off last year, firing a 35/33 for low gross on the night, while his High Stakes partner John Brinkman finally got on track with a 39/33. Together they defeated Ryan's Hope 34.5 to 10.5. Rob Burkley carded a 36/32 that led Grinders to a (caps lock) BIG (end caps lock) 22.5 to 22.5 push with the 500 pound gorilla that is sitting in the CGA living room with it's feet on the coffee table -- The Nappy Headed Bros. Jorge was nappy again with a 52/35 that saved it from being a much needed haircut.

It has been a brutal year for defending Team Champion Undy-Ni-Ebel. They have been looking for some magic to happen all year long. And in Week Five, it did. Penn & Teller made Undy-Ni-Ebel disappear. Well, if you look hard enough you will see that they are still there, but at 0-5 you have to really look hard. The Commash put up a 38/32 to tie for low net, while Brew put up 56/34 to post his second 12 pointer of the year.

In all the carnage that resulted in Week Five, Red Numbers emerged from the cloud of smoke billowing from the tunnel between the 7th and 8th holes as your new leader in the Team race. Shaffer posted a solid 38/36, while his partner John Solis, making his first sub appearance of the year, posted a stellar 42/33. They blew KC and The Sunshine Man off the dance floor by a super-chunky 36 to 9 tally. They now hold a 10.5 point lead over The Nappy Headed Bros. Grinders is in third place.

This is the first week that the Individual standings get calculated with a "throw away" score. Now that we have five weeks in, the Individual standings are calculated by using four out of the best five scores. By the end of the season, the standings will be based on the best 14 out of 18 scores. What we have right now is a horse race. Three golfers -- Shaffer, Webb and Burkley -- are tied for first with 43.5 points. In fourth, two points back, are the Nappy Ones -- Schoemer and Jorge. The next five players in the standings are within 6.5 points.
