The CGA invades Lebanon, Ohio on Saturday for the season's first major, the 7th annual Touch 'Em All Tournament. The format for the TEA is 27 holes of team play. The first nine holes are low net best ball, the second nine hole is two-man scramble, and the third nine is modified alternating shot. Teams will be competing for $550 in prize money and immortal fame with a spot on the Wall of Fame.
The Touch 'Em All Tournament was created to be a major that rewards team play. Unlike the original major, the CGA Championship, the TEA is completely a team competition. Shaker Run Golf Club is the permanent home of this annual event.
Opened in 1979, Shaker Run was originally built as a private course by Armco Steel for the use of it's employees. The original 18 hole layout was designed by renowned architect Arthur Hills. Later, a third nine hole layout, designed by Columbus native Dr. Michael Hurdzan, was added.
As mentioned above, the format of the tournament is 27 holes of team play. The first nine holes will be low net best-ball, with each player receiving their current league handicap for Week 5, adjusted to the slope of Shaker Run. The second nine holes will be two-man scramble and the third nine hole segment will be played under the rules of modified alternating shot. Team handicaps for the two-man scramble and modified alternating shot formats were calculated by dividing each team into an A player (lower handicap) and B player (higher handicap). For the scramble, 35% of the A player's full nine hole handicap was added to 15% of the B player's full nine hole handicap. For the alternating shot, 60% of the A player's full nine hole handicap was added to 40% of the B player's full nine hole handicap.
Due to the withdrawal of Jason Diwik, Shawn Swanson and George Tzagournis, there will be 9 teams competing for the 2008 TEA Title. Dan Freiburger has been activated from the reserve list to fill out the field. Since Jay Feller, John Brinkman, Steve Porterfield are partner-less, their names were put into a hat along with Dan's for a little CGA lotto to assign those players to teams. Pairings and tee times were also drawn from a hat. The drawing took place at Brad Underwood's office in Hilliard on May22nd. Present at the drawing was Brad Underwood.
