After starting out 0 and 2, some were starting to call Hos and Shaffer's team Dead Numbers. But some of that was certainly wishful thinking. After a 37/35 by Shaff in Week Two couldn't even secure a win, no one would blame he and Hos for wondering how low they needed to go to get 'er done. Week Three provided some insight: a 31 will do. Hosket's 38/31 was both low gross and low net, and he bagged the only birdie on a cold, soggy and windy night that seemed more appropriate for a tailgate party in the East lot than a golf league event. Hosket's 11.5 to 3.5 win over Ayers was big, but not as chunky as the 12.5 to 2.5 bite Shaffer (40/38) took out of Webb. Even though Red Numbers is 1-2 on the year, they have been hedging their losses quite nicely and currently sit in fourth place in the team standings. Week Four brings a Marquee Matchup with first place Schoe Me Wood.
Speaking of wood, Undy and Schoe-me added another win to a very impressive 3 and 0 start to the season. Undy (44/38) feasted on Tazmanian rump roast and ran up a 14.5 to 0.5 dinner bill. Meanwhile, FNG Steve Porterfield continued to impress with a 9 to 6 win over Scheomer. But Undy's gluttonous win over Tzagournis provided enough carbs for a fat 32.5 to 12.5 Schoe Me Wood win over Two Drink Minimum.
Southie followed up his 37/34 Player of the Week performance with a middle of the pack 42/40. However, Diwik was on the low side of middle with a 45/38 that earned him an 11.5 to 3.5 win. That was the bad news for Bob Evans. The good news was that Budzik provided all the ham and eggs that were needed with a 39/33. Feller left with a most of the egg on his face, dropping to Budzik by a score of 1 to 14. Bob Evans served up a Harvest Breakfast on Rollin' J's with a 29 to 16 win, good enough for third place after three weeks.
Many league observers predicted that Peter would struggle early as he prepares for his wedding this Saturday. Oh buddy, this is Peter we are talking about! Perhaps Doug May is not going to be able to make the wedding, because it sure seemed like he gift-wrapped a 57/51 and put a nice big bow on it with a note that said "Best Wishes to you and Mo." Peter got around in 43/41 and a 12 to 3 early wedding present. Maybe Geraghty thought that Greg May was getting married this weekend too, because he essentially gift-wrapped a 4 to 11 loss to The Commash. After putting on a clinic for the first 6 holes and holding a 2 up lead, Geraghty imploded and allowed The Commash to win the last three holes for the win. Boom Goes the Dynamite still managed to win the team match (they have won all three team matches so far this year) and hedged a bit in a 18 to 27 loss. High and Mighty has second place in the team standings.
Three weeks in, and still not a single sub has teed it up in 2008. That might be a record.
