Week 2 brought more of the "same" for the Cronies. The "same" being Steve Porterfield and Dr. Tzagournis winning easily. Porterfield shot a 38, net 32 in his beat down of Diwik. He was the lone crony to birdie #6 and #9. Birdieing number 6 is a tall order, just ask Brinkman who took a canoe to the other side of the creek to contemplate playing from lot #4589 still under construction.
I happened to run into Dr. Tzagournis at Churchill Downs on Saturday. As we waited for race #8, I was questioning him as to his horse picks. After all, the Doctor was sitting with the ESPN folks, and surely they knew more about the ponies than Whybrew and myself. George did not want to talk horses, bourbon, women or anything else to do with the Derby. He wanted to talk about one thing and one thing only.......what he was going to do to do to Smokin Joe on Monday "Underwood, I keep sending him text messages, telling him that I am going to crush him." After hearing all of this, I decided to lay off the 8th race and put that money on Georgie on Monday. So upon arriving to the GCD, I asked Smokin if I could put $30 on George in his match. Being the good CGA member that he is, Smokin accepted my wager. George got him by a good 6 lengths in putting an ass kicking on him 13 to 2. As I left the parking lot, I had to chuckle, it was a good day to be a CGA member.
Porterfield and Tzagournis lead the individual race and have positioned Porta Joe's and Dr. Jay to early leads over the rest of the field. Please remember, with byes, you might have to look a little deeper into the standings, as some players will have one less week than others. In an effort to stand out from past administration, the league office will do their best to project our standings.
The Major is set for Saturday, May 16th at FoxFire Players Club. The league is a buzz with excitement, as this monster of a course, becomes just the 3rd course ever to host multiple majors. Brian Debuoise, Manager at Foxfire, "we are just thrilled to be able to host our second CGA major, it is what all courses can only dream of. We will roll out the red carpet, and the tournament should give a much needed boost to the local economy. The players are lucky they will get to scramble through the woodlands, but scramble or not, I still think 14, 15, and 16 will knock out some of the teams. When the first player puts his drive into the woods, we will see what what scrambling is all about." Debuoise went on to add that he feels the alternating shot closing holes of 8 and 9 will set up to be a true test for the Champions.
Ryan Webb has started to plan the Post Major party. Details to follow, but for now get permission for a late, late late night. I call the basement couch!!
