K.C. Budzik was somewhere in the warm and sunny Carolinas having a post vacation-round beer on Monday night. Meanwhile, his pardsie Brett Southworth found himself in at The GC of D on a cool, wet and gray evening trying to hold on to first place money in the final event of the first half against defending Team Champion Red Numbers.
Make that a very irritated and pissed off Red Numbers. Things haven't gone as well as expected for Red Numbers so far in their title defense. Losing to last place Two Drink Minimum in Week 8 put a "bitter beer face" on Shaffer and Hosket heading into Week 9. It's still there. With Budzik taking the week off and Super Sub Dan Freiburger playing for him, Bob Evans experienced another week of sales growth, winning 23.5 to 21.5. The win was more than big enough to secure first place money for the first half. Bob Evans finishes 21.5 points ahead of second place Carry the Bag, which has come on strong in recent weeks.
Budzik's first eight weeks were so solid that he was able to take a week off and still maintain his hold on first place in the Season Individual race. He can thank his pardsie for knocking off Shaffer, which helped a lot. Shaffer falls to third place, but is only 3.5 out of first after taking only his second loss of the season.
Here at the League Office, we try not to make this page all about "me". But sometimes, very rarely, we can't help it. Right now happens to be one of those times. The longest individual match winning streak in the league reached eight on Monday night as The Commash defeated Smoking Joe by a score of 13 to 2. The Commash fired up a 36/32 for High and Mighty, sparking a 37 to 8 win that moved them into third place money in the first half team race. The 36 gross was the only sub-40 round on the night, and his net 32 was lowest by four shots, making The Commash the default winner of the Player of the Week award. He finishes 8 and 0 in the first half and has accumulated more total points than anyone in the league to date. After the two lowest scores are kicked out, Budzik holds a slim 1 point lead. The two ex-pardsies, who teamed up to win the Team Championship in 2005, will face off in Week 12 in a pivotal match.
So far, only one sub request has been submitted for Week 10. John Brinkman will be on vacation.
It looks like the CGA will again be well represented in the 5th Annual David K. Dunlap Golf Classic which will be held at The GC of D on July 3rd. Good luck to all CGA participants.
We're half way through the 2008 CGA season. There is no better time than now to touch 'em all.
